Royce Gracie and Lukeus Peterson, at a seminar
History:
The main focus we have at Peak Performance Decatur is on our Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu classes. Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu is a martial art primarily focused on grappling, especially on ground-fighting. The name Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu denotes the art's roots, which are from Judo.

Judo was brought from Japan to Brazil by Mitsuyo Maeda, a student of Judo's founder, Jigaro Kano. Kano had learned Japanese Jiu-Jitsu (usually spelled simply "Jujutsu") in Japan, and changed the rules and focuses of Jujutsu in order to promote his own art - Judo - as a sport meant for public consumption. Before that, Jujutsu had been originally designed by the Samurai as a backup plan for when they lost their katana on the battlefield.

Mitsuyo Maeda was one of Kano's students. He immigrated to Brazil in the early 20th century. He taught his Judo to Gastão Gracie, a business partner of his, and Gracie's sons, who included Carlos and Helio Gracie (pictured above).

Helio, as a boy, had been very sickly and puny compared to his brothers. While he understood the Judo techniques taught to him, he was rarely able to perform them on his more athletic brothers. Helio modified the techniques so that a very weak practitioner, such as himself, would be able to defeat a larger, stronger, faster opponent. The principle of using the ground is like being in a swimming pool; a small person can't lift a heavy one in normal circumstances, but they can in a pool. In the same way, a skilled Jiu-Jitsu practitioner, on the ground, is easily able to control and defeat much larger opponents.

In the modern iterations, Judo and Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu remain very similar. They're both grappling martial arts; where Judo focuses on standing up throwing techniques (called tachi-waza in Japanese), Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu focuses on the ground and submissions (such as chokes and arm locks) which can be applied from there. They both make use of "randori", called "rolling" in Jiu-Jitsu, where students are able to train against fully-resisting opponents in a way that wouldn't be safe or feasible in the striking martial arts.

These striking martial arts were thought to be the only way to fight, especially in the golden age of kung fu movies, the 1970s and 1980s.
This changed when the UFC© was created. One of the sons of Helio Gracie - Royce Gracie - took Jiu-Jitsu to the world stage by defeating all the opponents offered to him. Every opponent was a skilled representative of another martial art, and every opponent outweighed the 6'1, 175 pound Jiu-Jitsu black belt. Royce was undefeated in all of his fights. He proved that leverage and superior technique allowed a skilled grappler to handle a larger, stronger opponent. In the modern era, a mixed martial artist isn't to be taken seriously unless he's at least aware of the basics of grappling.
Benefits of Jiu-Jitsu for:

The benefits of Jiu-Jitsu are accessible to anyone, regardless of age, weight, physical shape, or previous experience! Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu serves multiple purposes:

- It is practical, and remains today an excellent method of self-defense. It empowers individuals to protect themselves, and those around them.
- It is fun and addicting. Our team is a friendly one with a welcoming, family atmosphere.
- It is an excellent workout. Several of our students have reported 40+ pounds of weight loss. Jiu-Jitsu will get you into excellent physical shape!
- It is a sport: if you'd like to challenge yourself, we participate regularly as a team in local Jiu-Jitsu tournaments. (Of course, if this isn't something you're interested in, there is no requirement to compete)
- It is an excellent stress reliever. At the end of a bad day at the office, or just a long one, nothing feels better than a good hour or two on the mats.
"I had this big kid picking on me during recess, he wouldn't leave me alone. I was trying to leave but he tried to punch me. So I took him down and held him down until the teacher came by and saw us." - Anonymous 7 year old student

Unfortunately, bullying has always been and still is a huge problem, especially for kids in school.

Our kids classes teach that the easiest way to win a fight is to never get into one, but that, if necessary, you must stand up for yourself and protect yourself. Learning Jiu-Jitsu, which was specifically designed for the physically weak, will help kids accomplish that.

Physical bullying, while it still happens, is less and less common by high school. Unfortunately, it is phased out at that age, and continued on into adulthood, by emotional or psychological bullying. Jiu-Jitsu helps kids, teens, and adults with this form of bullying by teaching self-reliance and self-confidence.

If you are interested in scheduling an anti-bullying seminar with us, please contact us!
"No human being deserves to be made to fear any other person, and nobody deserves to be hurt by any other person. Unfortunately, we live in a world where the physically strong will take advantage of and impose their will on the physically weak.

It is a personal passion and goal of mine to combat sexual abuse and predation, and to protect everyone I can from the animals who would do harm to them. It's a cause very near and dear to my heart, and it is the greatest part of my job to be able to empower everyone, especially women and children, to protect themselves from anyone who would do harm to them."
- Lukeus Peterson

Peak Performance features a thriving community of women, at all of our locations and at all levels on the Jiu-Jitsu spectrum, who have embraced the Jiu-Jitsu lifestyle and, consequently, have an added measure of security in their everyday lives. Bullying, sexual abuse, and rape cease to be a problem when you are able to stand up for and protect yourself.

We at Peak Performance Decatur are dedicated to doing what we can to eliminate the problem of rape and abuse. It is our belief and hope that Jiu-Jitsu can help accomplish this.

"Police forces, in my opinion, have been vilified in the last several years by the media with regards to their use of physical force. What people sometimes fail to remember is that, every day, police officers put their lives on the line to protect the community and uphold the law. Of course police corruption occurs and of course there have been tragic instances where the police have misused physical force. For the vast majority of the time though, the police still are 'the good guys', with wives, children, and families that they deserve to go home to at the end of the day." - Lukeus Peterson

Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu was created and tested by the Gracie Family on the streets of Rio De Janeiro. Today it is the basis of the US Army Combatives program. When they started training Jiu-Jitsu, the Gracies needed it as a martial art - not to win medals or cagefights, but to protect themselves against people who didn't necessarily want to beat them up; sometimes, they wanted to kill them.

Peak Performance Decatur proudly stands by the United States Armed Forces, as well as our law enforcement agencies.

Armed Forces:
We offer membership discounts and seminars to any former or active servicemen and servicewomen in any branch of the United States Armed Forces. We are proud to teach our Jiu-Jitsu to you in the hopes that it will keep you safe in the line of duty and will help return you safely home to us. Thank you for your service!

Law Enforcement:
We offer membership discounts and seminars to any active members of Texas law enforcement! Jiu-Jitsu has been further modified from its original conception for police to include weapon retention, suspect restraint, and other techniques which will keep you safe in the line of duty. Not only that, but we stay up-to-date on the legal restrictions necessary to keep law enforcement officers out of "police brutality" lawsuits, while staying safe.

We would like to thank our Texas law enforcement and security personnel for their service!
We have trained children and adults with various physical and mental disabilities.
